Walking on Tenerife
The volcanic crater
landscape of Las Cañadas del Teide is uniquely beautiful and is the nearest
most of us will get to walking on the moon. As the sun starts to set,
the atmosphere is truly out of this world. The volcanic hills turn a
vibrant red in the setting sun and cast giant shadows across the desolate
landscape.
Above it all rises
Teide, Spain's highest mountain, at 3715 metres above sea level. Other
magnificent areas for walkers include the Orotava valley with it's vast pine
forests, the wild valleys and rugged mountains of Teno in the North-West and
the Anaga peninsula in the North-East. The latter has a steep, desolate
coastline, isolated valleys and wooded mountain ridges offering outstanding
walking. Some of the villages in this area were only recently connected
to the road network. Walkers can also experience a dramatic descent through
the Barranco de Masca, a gorge which ends in a spectacular bay surrounded by
cliffs.
